At the age of 7, the family relocated to Lewiston and started a new life on a 10-acre farm. The family was almost completely self-sufficient. They raised fruit, vegetables, meat, milk and a lovely young daughter. She worked hard, but remembered her childhood with great fondness. She attended grade school at the Orchards School and high school in Lewiston.
After graduating at the age of 17, Lou succumbed to the attractions of the big city. She left Lewiston to go to Chicago to attend the Gregg School of Shorthand Reporting and study court reporting. After graduation, she worked as a legal secretary for four years. It was in Chicago she met Graham "Gray" Condie, and they were married in 1951. Together they had five children.
In 1964, the family moved to Marshalltown, Iowa. Here, Lou raised her children, was a gracious hostess, and participated in her community.
She was a longtime volunteer for the Marshalltown Medical Center, where she worked in the gift shop, and the Area Education Agency, where she worked with children with disabilities. She was an active member of P.E.O. and Theta Chi. She was an avid golfer and won the Women's Championship at Elmwood Country Club.
In 2011, following the death of her husband, she moved to Rosewood Estates in Roseville, Minn., near her son Tom and his family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Graham.
