In the early years of his acting career he was with the Benson company where he played leading roles under Terence Gray. In 1939, he received the Academy Award Oscar for Best Actor for the film "Goodbye, Mr. Chips." His films include "Precious Bane" (1931), "A Sleeping Clergyman" (1933), "The 39 Steps" (1935), "Goodbye Mr. Chips" (1939) and Heartbreak House" (1943). At the Old Vic in 1939 and 1953 he played Beckett in "Murder In The Cathedral."
