Betty Lee Dong, 86, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2012, at Seton Hospital, after a long illness. Betty was born in San Francisco on December 30, 1925, the second of six children of Tom Shee Lee and Jone Lee. She attended Francisco Junior High School and Galileo High School, and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1947.
Betty met her husband, Gilbert Kern Dong, Sr., at the University of California. They married in July, 1948, and had four children. She worked in a variety of positions for the Department of Social Services for the City and County of San Francisco spanning 40 years.
Betty is survived by her four children and their spouses/partners, Joanne and Michael Cate of Riverside, CA; Suzanne Dong and Jim Sievers of Los Altos Hills, CA; Gilbert Dong, Jr. and Diane Chin of Oakland, CA; and Steven and Susan Dong of Brentwood, CA; six grandchildren Lisa Dong, Jason Dong, Andrew Trujillo, Matthew Murillo, Jordan Dong, and Mariah Dong; two great-grandchildren Layla and Dominic McDonald; siblings Blossom Lee, Wing Lee, Howard Lee, Susan Lee and George Lee; and many nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband Gilbert, sister May Fawn and brother Hanley Lee.
A viewing will be held on Friday, December 28, from 3:00 to 9:00 PM, with the family visiting from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. The service will be on Saturday, December 29, at 1:00 PM. All services will take place at Duggan's Serra Mortuary, 500 Westlake Avenue, Daly City. A brief Committal Ceremony will follow the service at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 1000 El Camino Real, Colma. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in Betty's memory to the American Diabetes Association, 111 W St John St, Suite 1150; San Jose, CA 95113.
