Mary was born on December 21, 1916, in Brewer, Maine, to the late Harold and Mildred Wright. She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Frank L. Donnini, and her brother William P. Wright.
Mary was a distinguished student at the University of Maine in Orono. During her sophomore year she was named an "All Maine Woman". She earned an undergraduate degree in Home Economics in 1938 and maintained a life-long interest in the university. She also received a Master's degree in education from Boston University in 1963.
She had a full career with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension Service and spent many years working in Cumberland County before retiring in 1976. During that time she served for one year as president of the National Association of Extension Home Economists. Mary was the first woman in the state to be named to the rank of Extension Educator, the equivalent level to that of a full professor.
She had a life-long interest in sewing and passed her considerable knowledge on to others by teaching sewing classes at Sun City Center. She and Frank were Co-Presidents of the Audubon Society at Sun City Center. Travel with her husband to various parts of the United States and overseas became a yearly event. The common destination abroad was the Marche Province in Italy. This area in Italy is where her husband grew up and is home to many of the Donnini family relatives.
Survivors include her sons; William Donnini and his wife Roberta of South Portland and Frank Donnini and his wife Zell of Newport News, Virginia. Also included are four grandchildren; William Jr., Danielle, Zachary and Joshua.
The family would like to extend heartfelt gratitude to Karen and David Landa and the entire staff at Ledgeview Assisted Living for the attention, care and compassion they provided Mary during her time at Ledgeview.
Internment will be at National Veterans Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland. Arrangements are by Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State Street, Portland.
Contributions in her memory can be made to: Alzheimer's Association, Maine Chapter, 170 Route 1, Falmouth, ME 04105.
