Helen Frances Douglas Brazil
March 6, 1921 - April 8, 2016
Resident of Saratoga & Los Gatos

Helen Brazil wanted to live all of her 95 years to the fullest. She did. To her that meant being engaged, connected, and active; it meant a commitment to values of the highest order, rooted in her Christian faith.

Born in Salt Lake City, Helen was the oldest of four children of Charles Gordon and Helen (Sharp) Douglas. Growing up she enjoyed horseback riding, Girl Scouts, and playing piano.

Helen graduated with a B.A. in History from UCLA. While there she led the Women's Glee Club, was active in many campus committees, was an officer in Gamma Phi Beta sorority, and met her husband to be, Burton Russell Brazil.

After their graduation in June, on September 27, 1941, Helen and Burt married. During World War II, while Burt served in the Aleutian Islands, Helen worked for Western Airlines. She also volunteered recording audio books for the blind.

After the War, Burt and Helen moved to Saratoga where they raised a family of four children, shepherding them to and through their various school, athletic and other activities, while also being involved in numerous community, philanthropic, and service organizations, most of which she at one time led. Helen loved to laugh and developed life-long friendships during this time.

As her children got older, Helen worked for the Saratoga Chamber of Commerce and later for a local bank. She was active in PEO, Saratoga Foothill Club, Saratoga Federated Church, Montalvo Service Group, and Faculty Wives/Association at San Jose State, where Burt worked for 35 years.

After Burt's death, Helen moved to the Terraces of Los Gatos, where she spent the last twelve years of her life. She was an avid lifelong bridge player, including Bridge for Special Olympics, and was involved in multiple social and service groups to the very end.

Our beloved mother is survived by her four children and their families: sons Wayne (Rebecca), and John (Janice), and daughters Lynn Brazil and Anne Kolb. She had 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, 2016, at the Presbyterian Church of Los Gatos, 16575 Shannon Road, followed by a reception in the Glen Rouse Assembly Hall (GRA) at the Terraces of Los Gatos, 800 Blossom Hill Road.

In lieu of flowers, Helen would be honored by contributions to the Special Olympics or to the Montalvo Service Group.
