"Les" Doulton was the third son of Josiah and Emmeline Doulton. Born, along with his younger brother Cyril, in the seven-year period when his parents had returned to London from their stay in Australia, and prior to their emmigration to the United States in 1871, Les was nine when his parents bought the Montecito ranch that would be their home for the rest of their lives and would become the future Miramar Hotel.

Les took up farming initially, possibly on some of the acreage that his parents had acquired with the ranch. In 1896 at the age of 28 he married Harriot Dorr Schaffer of Pennsylvania. Harriot's father (William Lehman Schaffer, 1827-1863) had died when Harriot was very young, and her mother Mary Warren Dorr ("Mrs. Schaffer" to many of the family youngsters) came to live with her daughter and son-in-law until her death in 1910. On the point of land just up the beach from Miramar, Les and Harriot built "Edgecliff" at 1 Eucalyptus Lane [pictured lower left in a photograph taken about 1900]. After his mother's death in 1910, he and his older brother Harold ran the hotel. In 1923, Les retired and he and his wife moved to Carmel-by-the-Sea; the house became part of the Edgecliff Beach Club.
