John J. Downing, 40, of 159 E. Main St., died in Chillicothe Hospital Wednesday from injuries received shortly before noon when his automobile was involved in a three-way crash at Bourneville.

The state patrol said Downing was eastbound and attempted a left turn into a driveway alongside Meyer's Grocery. His auto was hit on the left rear by an eastbound tractor-trailer driven by Edward Harper, the patrol reported.

The impact knocked the Downing car against a parked Coca Cola Co. truck driven by James Notestone. Downing was thrown partially out of his car and was caught between the auto and the parked truck.

He suffered crushed ribs, fractures of both legs and arms, and internal injuries. He was taken to Chillicothe Hospital by the Smith ambulance of Bainbridge.

The patrol said the Downing car was demolished, while the truck was moderately damaged. The semi had light damage. The accident is still under investigation.

Mr. Downing, who became the father of a son the day before the fatality, was a roofer for the E. H. Leaverton firm.

He was born July 11, 1920 in Scioto County, the son of James D. and Osie Downing.

Surviving are his wife, the former Nancy Depoy; the son, John James Downing Jr.; two sisters, Mrs. Harold Reink and Mrs. Mary Proehl, both of Dayton; a grandmother, Mrs. Mary Rose of Alma; and an uncle, Elmer Downing, this city.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II and had served in the Air Force during the Korean conflict.

Service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Ware Funeral Home, the Rev. James Mitchell officiating. Burial will be in Greenlawn Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Friday.
