He was a Commercial Traveller when he enlisted.
On the 1915 Nominal Roll of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, 3rd Battalion, "A" Company, he was recorded as Barrack Quarter Master Sergeant Henry Thomas Doyle.
Sent overseas on 5 February 1916, on board the Ulimaroa, he arrived at Suez on 12 March 1916.
He was promoted to Second Lieutenant on 29 September 1918.
His brother, Lance Corporal Charles Doyle died on 30 April 1920, aged 27, died of injuries received in WW1.
He was a military passenger on board R.M.S. Leinster which was sunk by torpedoes in the Irish Sea, 16 miles east of Dublin, shortly before 10am on the morning of 10th October 1918, on its outbound journey of 100km [68 miles] from Kingstown [now Dun Laoghaire], Dublin, to Holyhead, Anglesey, North Wales.
