Margaret was the daughter of Captain John Abner and Priscilla (Hurst) Drake of Port Hilford, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Her father was a Master Mariner. In 1881, she lived with her family in Indian Harbour, Nova Scotia. She married Henry Atwater on February 26, 1890 in Port Hilford, Nova Scotia. During the 1901 census, their young family was living in the town of Antigonish in Nova Scotia. They later moved to Rumford, Maine and lived there for many years on the South Rumford Road before moving to Canton, Maine in her later years. She was a member of the Rumford Baptist Church.
Henry and Margaret had five children: Mrs. Julian (Priscilla Sabina Atwater) Delano, Mrs. Gerald (Margaret Jane Atwater) Curtis, Mrs. Hugh (Mae Drake Atwater) Phillips, David Henry Atwater. She was survived by an older brother three years her senior, John Hurst Drake, of Massachusetts, and her 9 grandchildren.
She was predeceased by an infant son, William Abner Atwater in 1893, and her siblings David Francis (b. abt. 1852/53) and Abner James (b. abt. 1856/57.)
