The Alcester (SD) Union, April 8, 1948, Page 1, Col. 1: "FUNERAL SERVICE, PIONEER SETTLER HELD TUESDAY Came to Union County in Covered Wagon in 1874; Spent Some Time in California, Returning to This State Year Ago

"A. H. Draves, early day settler in Union county, passed away Saturday morning, April 3, at 10:30, at his home in Sioux Falls, having been in failing health during the past few months.

"The remains were brought to Alcester and on Tuesday funeral services were held at 1:30 at the Nilson funeral home, and at 2:00 o'clock at the Peace Lutheran church south of town. Burial was made at the church cemetery. Rev. Troemel, of Sioux Falls, had charge of the service, assisted by Rev. E. C. Beyer of the local church. Other funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Nilson funeral home.

"Albert Herman Draves was born March 1, 1864, at Hofstedt, Germany. With his parents and sisters he came to America in 1868, settling at Ripon, Wisconsin. They resided there for six years, and in 1874 the family traveled by the covered wagon route, coming to Union county, then Dakota territory, where they settled on a homestead.

"There he grew to manhood, and in 1880 was confirmed and became a member of the Lutheran church in which faith he remained until his death.

"On April 2, 1891, he was united in marriage to Miss Alvina M. Reinert, at Winchester, Wisconsin. To this union no children were born. In the due course of time they adopted a boy from the Children's Aid Society of Chicago, named William E. Howell. A few years later they took to raise, a girl, Ruth Gertrude Reynolds, who passed away in 1931, leaving a daughter, Barbara Ann Dunning, Long Beach, California.

"Mr. Draves made his home in California since about 1920, until a few years ago, when he came to Alcester for a short residence. He returned to California for several years, and about a year ago he moved to Sioux Falls.

"Mr. Draves had attained the age of 84 years and 23 days. He leaves to mourn his death his wife, a son, William E. Draves, Sioux Falls, and his only niece, Mrs. P. Weidenfeller, Alcester; grandchildren, Russell Draves and Mrs. Alice Schenk, who live in Wisconsin, and Bette and Mary Jane Draves and Barbara Dunning; also six great grandchildren. His parents and two sisters preceded him in death."
