Had Resided on Same farm for 43 years In home Which Saw Many Activities of Troy Club

Mrs. Newton Bawn, 84, died Thursday afternoon, Dec. 15th, at her home south west of Eagle Grove. Due to her advanced years and failing health her death was not unexpected. On her birthday, last Feb. 11th, Mrs. Bawn was the guest of honor at a party in her home at which time her picture was taken with her six great grandchildren. Mrs. Bawn had made her home on the same farm for 43 years. In 1922 the large Bawn-Emerson home was built at the same location, where she had since resided. This home, being the largest one in the neighborhood, was for years one of the meeting places for the long time organized Troy Culture club, when members and their families met for their annual winter reunion.

Mrs. Bawn is survived by one son and one daughter, George Bawn and Mrs. Clarence Emerson. Other survivors are five grandchildren, six great grandchildren, one brother Chas. H. Duer of this city, and four sisters, Miss Mae Duer and Mrs. Susan Nelson of Cookeville, Tenn., Mrs. Flora Pieper of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mrs. Pearl Weimer of Hartley, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in the Methodist church in charge of Rev. Roy Cox. Casket bearers were Richard Pederson, Del Deischer, J. R. Peterson, Wayne Emerson, Orin Emerson and D. D. Emerson. Interment followed in Rose Hill cemetery. Here from out of town for the services were Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Weimer, Hartley; Mr. and Mrs. Ray Duer, Clarion, Mr. and Mrs. Willard Duer, Kanawha; Mr. and Mrs. Hardt Nelson, Cedar Falls; Mr. and Mrs. Paul Griffiths, Mrs. Carl Patterson, Mrs. Gene Galpin, Parkersburg; Mr. and Mrs. O. C. Emerson, Mr. and Mrs. John Emerson and daughter of Knoxville.

Melvina C. Duer was born in Washington county, Iowa on February 11, 1861 and died Dec. 15, 1955. She was the oldest child of George W. and Sarah Jane Duer. They moved successively to Marshall county and then to Grundy county in 1871. Here she was married to Newton Bawn on October 29. 1884. Two children were born to them, George F. Bawn and Nellie Mae, now Mrs. Clarence Emerson. In February 1893 they moved to a farm west of Eagle Grove, here they resided until the spring of 1912 when they moved to Troy township where she has since made her home.

She is preceded in death by her grandson Gerald Emerson, in 1924, her husband, Newton, in January, 1927, and two brothers and two sisters in later years.

She is survived by her two children, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren, also one brother C. H. Duer of Eagle Grove and four sisters Miss Mae Duer and Mrs. Susan Nelson of Cookeville, Tenn., Mrs. Flora Pieper of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mrs. Pearl Weimer of Hartley, Iowa.

Funeral services were held in the Methodist church Dec. 17th in charge of Rev. Roy Cox. Interment was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
