Marguerite Anna Baker, 92, a resident of Brockville, Chicago and Prescott, died July 13 at Wellington House, Prescott. She had broken her hip in June.

Born at Brockville General Hospital May 10, 1911, she was the daughter of Charles Roy Earle and the former Adalene Charlotte Hodges. She attended Prince of Wales School and Brockville Collegiate Institute.

After her father died, her mother remarried George Dyke of Chicago. The family moved there until Mr. Dyke died as a result of a car accident in 1934, when they returned to Brockville, living on Cedar Street.

Before her marriage, she worked as a switchboard operator for the Bell Telephone Company on Apple Street, Brockville. She also worked as a seamstress for Clarence Babcock Furnishings; at Harry Olsen's Homemade Candy Shop; and, after her own children were grown, as a babysitter for many families.

On July 25, 1936 she married Joseph Henry Baker at Trinity Anglican Church, Brockville. They lived at 63 Church Street until 1956, when they moved to a new home at 63 Stewart Boulevard, built on the Baker family farm property (originally owned by Charles and Matilda Baker, at the north end of William Street). She remained in her home after her husband died in 1983 until she moved to Wellington House in Prescott in 1998.

Mrs. Baker was an active member of Trinity Anglican Church and its altar guild and Anglican Church Women and belonged to the quilters guild. For many years she drove cancer patients to Kingston.

"Mrs. B," as she was known to many, enjoyed the outdoors, swimming, canoeing, skating and snowshoeing in her younger years. She was a great supporter of the Brockville Hunt Club, the hunters and their wives.

She and her husband hosted many parties for their family and friends, both at their cottage and home. They spent many winters at their trailer in Lakeland, Florida.

She had the ability to put both young and old at ease and will be remembered for her generosity and selflessness, for laughter and fun and for her love of her family.

Mrs. Baker is survived by two daughters, Margie Mulvihill and her husband Peter of Lyn and Nancy Jonkman and husband John of Brockville; five grandchildren, Matthew Mulvihill and wife Laura, Amy Durant and husband Dan, Sarah Mulvihill and Joseph and Christopher Jonkman; and great-grandchildren Katie and Samuel Mulvihill and Dillan Durant.

Also surviving are her brother Jack Hodges Earle and his children Lynda Schaub and husband Peter, Mary Rivett, Rose Peterson and husband Kenton and Anna Green and husband Blake, and their families.

She was predeceased by her husband Joe and in February 2003 by her sister-in-law Helen Earle.

Friends called at the Irvine Funeral Home, Brockville, on July 15. The funeral was held July 16 at Trinity Anglican Church, Brockville, with Rev. Ron Horst officiating. During the service, tributes were given by close family friend Morna MacOdrum Parker and her daughter Margie. Burial followed at Oakland Cemetery.

The pallbearers were Peter and Matthew Mulvihill, John Jonkman, Dan Durant, Peter Schaub and Al Cinnamon.

Memorial donations were directed to Trinity Church and also received by Hospice of Providence Palliative Care, Canadian National Institute for the Blind, Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Diabetes Association and Baker's Park in Brockville.
