She was born on May 10, 1912 in Donnellson, IL, the daughter of James and Minnie Gamby Edwards. They moved to Springfield, when she was four. She attended Springfield Public Schools. She worked at Myers Brothers, the State of Illinois Department of Public Instruction, and in the office of the Townhouse Apartments, before becoming owner of Lil Folks Shop, on South Sixth Street. She retired in 1981.
She married to George T. Bowers, in 1946. He died in 1971. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church for over 50 years. She also belonged to the American Business Women's Association, and was an honorary member of the Sangamon Surf Club.
She is survived by a nephew, Daniel H. Gardner of Michigan; extended family, Nancy Doyle, Debra Dickason, Wendy Call, Court and Lynne Dickason, Jane Crawford, Mildred Carnduff, Edith Raye, Susan Kerr and Florence Fleschli, all of Springfield; and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, Ernest Edwards; and sister, Dorothy Edwards Gardner.
Visitation will be from 1-2 pm Saturday, February 28, 2009, at Staab Funeral Home. Funeral Service at 2 pm Saturday at Staab Funeral Home with Deacon Richard Gietl and Rev. Dr. Bob Swickard officiating. Burial will be in Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Memorials may be given to Shriner's Hospital for Children.
