The youngest son of Governor Ninian Edwards, Benjamin bolted the Whig party in 1858 & became the head of the Springfield Democratic party. After the battle of Antietam, he was very active in supporting Lincoln's call for troops & fought for the preservation of the Union. Judge of the circuit court for a short period, he preferred the practice of law & at the time of his death was President of the Illinois State Bar Association.
