His father was killed on duty as a policeman in Cheyenne in 1907.

His mother died following the birth of his younger twin brothers. The twins died within months of his mother.

Charles had a long military career which began with active duty in WY.

Charles served in WWI and WWII. He then attended the University of Wyoming and then received his law degree from John Marshall Law School in Chicago. He owned a successful law practice.
