U.S. Congressman. He attended the Latin School in New Jersey, Princeton College, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1833 and commenced the practice of law in Bridgeton, New Jersey. Relocating to Port Gibson, Mississippi, in 1837, he continued the practice of law and was elected as a Democrat to the Twenty-ninth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Jefferson Davis, serving January 26 to March 3, 1847, Declining to be a candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law and was a member of the Mississippi State Senate, (1853-65). In 1865, he was elected as a judge to the Mississippi State Supreme Court, serving until he resigned in 1868. Moving to Tennessee, he resumed the practice of law and was elected chancellor of the twelfth division of Tennessee, in 1886. While delivering an address of welcome to President Grover Cleveland arriving in Tennessee, he died at age 75.
