Ninety years a resident of Point Place, Mrs. Barbara Brown died Sunday in the home of her son, John Brown, Shoreland road, on the site of the little log cabin in which she went as a bride 70 years ago. As Barbara Engel, she was born in her parents' home on the Ottawa river. At that time, Toledo was a remote community 10 miles away. The city's growth and expansion have brought its boundaries within less than two miles of the present home built in place of the log cabin. Mrs. Brown was a charter member of St. Mary's parish, Cherry and Michigan streets, where she was confirmed and married. Some of Mrs. Brown's most interesting experiences were the installation of her first telephone, the burning of huge piles of sturgeon, now extinct in the Ottawa river, by fisherman who deplored catching them in their nets, and the steaming of the first large excursion boat into the stream which now accomodates only small boats. Besides her son, Mrs. Brown is survived by three grandchildren and her brother, George Engel.
Funeral services will be held in St. Mary's church Wednesday at 9:30 A.M. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery.
