From the Bates County Democrat, Thursday, September 14, 1882 = "SAD SHOOTING - A husband Shoots his Wife, Believing Her to be a Robber. Mr. Wm. Ensley, an honorable farmer who lives five miles west of Johnstown, on last Wednesday night a week ago was awakened by some fiend trying to break into his house. After determining just what steps to take he cautioned his wife to be still in bed; then he took down his shot gun, intending if he got sight of the prowler to shoot him. After a few minutes search he returned inside of the house and seeing a figure standing in front of him and supposing it to be a man he discharged his gun, killing his wife almost instantly. She lived only long enough to exclaim, "Oh! Will, you have killed me; take care of the baby and meet me in heaven." What a world of pathos, tenderness and love in those few words. They have been married a little over two years and the ill-fated mother leaves a little babe motherless and a sorrow-stricken father comfortless."
