Harvejo Ethridge (Jo) Askew, 90, passed away quietly at her Ardmore residence on Thursday morning of July 10, 2014. Born on April 17, 1924, in Milford Texas, to Robert and Estelle (Duff) Ethridge, she was the youngest of four children.
Jo moved to Oak Cliff, Texas from Wolfe City, Texas, when she was 12 with her mother following the death of her father. She graduated from Adamson High in Oak Cliff in the class of 1942. Two years later she and Andrew C. (Andy) Askew, Jr. of Tulsa, Oklahoma, married in Dallas following his discharge from the Army on December 28, 1944.
Jo and Andy relocated to California for 10 years, living in the San Francisco and Los Angeles areas, where their first three sons were born. Moving to Oklahoma in 1954 to be closer to family in Tulsa and Dallas, they settled in Ardmore, two more sons were born here. Jo lived in her home in Ardmore for 60 years. She always said she chose Ardmore so that when her boys got in trouble they would just be brought home.
Known for her positive and active life in Ardmore, Jo was a member of First United Methodist Church of Ardmore, where she was a long time member of the choir, and for many years taught the 8th grade Sunday school class. She loved to water ski at Lake Murray where Jo and the boys spent most of their summer days. She also loved playing golf at Dornick Hills, enjoyed travel and became a gourmet cook. Jo was always eager to attempt new cuisines for her many dinner parties at home and outside in the yard.
Also members of Ardmore's Four Seasons Dance Club, Jo and Andy loved to dance to classic big bands of their time. Jo was also known as an avid gardener, and had a special fondness for yellow roses. Jo was loved by all who knew her, as her everpresent smile and laugh were contagious.
Jo is preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Andy, on May 12, 2007.
She is survived by her five sons and their families: Warren Everett of Houston, Texas, Marc Robbins of Traverse City, Michigan, Michael Burt (and Stephanie) of Redstone, Colorado, Tom Randall "Randy" (and Cindy) of San Diego, California, and Kurt Lawrence (and Gail) also of San Diego, California. Jo had seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 27th at 4:30 p.m. in the Centennial Chapel of Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home, Ardmore, Oklahoma, conducted by the Rev. Dan Patman.
