He resided in Lancaster County, Nebraska prior to the war.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on December 31, 1941 at Fort Crook, Nebraska. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed in construction and also as Married.
Richard was declared "Missing In Action" when his B-17 failed to return from a mission to shadow a Japanese convoy of four destroyers in the Vitiaz Strait which is between New Guinea & New Britain during the war. He was awarded the Purple Heart.
