"JESSE FAIRCHILD died at his home in the town of Oneonta, near the village of Oneonta, April 24, 1892. He was born in Connecticut, but when he was yet a lad his parents removed to Bainbridge, Chenango Co., N.Y., and there died when he was quite young. Thus comparatively little is known of his ancestral history by members of the family, except that his parents came of old Connecticut families of reliable Yankee stock, and were pioneers in Bainbridge. Their names were Silas and Naomi (Bliss) Fairchild, and they were recognized as good, honest people.
Jesse Fairchild was one of a family of children numbering not less than nine or ten, all of whom are deceased. He grew to manhood in Chenango County, and was brought up to agricultural pursuits. He was married, in Bainbridge, to Sarah N. Bradford, who was born and reared in Chenango County, and died within seven months of her marriage. Mr. Fairchild was again married, his second wife being Miss Belle Morenus, who was born in Oneonta, March 23, 1829, and was well educated in the public schools of Oneonta. About a year after their marriage, she and her husband settled in Oneonta, where Mr. Fairchild was engaged in business for many years. He subsequently retired to a small farm on the south side of the Susquehanna River. This pleasant home overlooks the river and a beautiful landscape, including the valleys and hills around Oneonta. Here he resided for twenty-two years, or until his death. He was a man of quiet disposition, of even temperament, and honest in his dealings with mankind. He was a Republican in politics, and liberal in religious views. He was in every sense and upright man.
Mrs. Fairchild continues to reside at the old homestead. She is the mother of nine children, three of whom are deceased. Those living are as follows: George Winthrop, proprietor of the Oneonta Herald, a successful paper, and probably the leading weekly journal of the county. He has for years been an active newspaper man, beginning when fourteen years of age, and has by his own efforts worked up to his present enviable position, the ownership of a valuable and influential paper. He married Miss Josephine Mills Sherman, duaghter of the late Willis Sherman. The home of Mr. and Mrs. Fairchild is one of the finest residences in Oneonta. Jennie E. is a teacher in the Union Schools of Oneonta; Charles J. married Adeline Mitchell, and lives in Sanford, Broome Co., N.Y.; W.E. is engaged in W.L. Brown's hardware store in Oneonta; he married Mary Curtis. Mary N. and May are both at home with their mother."
