Passing of Mrs. Elizabeth Ahart
Saturday last November 20th, Mrs. Elizabeth Ahart, a pioneer resident of this county, passed away at her home, in Pleasant Valley. Although she had suffered with stomach trouble for some time,she appeared as well as usual the day before her death which, was attributed to heart failure.
Mrs. Ahart was born in Germany, May 14, 1846 and was 69 years 6 months and 19 days at her death. She came to Philadelphia when a child then to San Francisco and later moved to Nevada. There she was married to James Ahart in September 1864, and came to California, settling in Nevada county with her husband. Two years later they came to El Dorado county where they resided ever since. She was the mother of fourteen children, nine of whom are still living. Four sons, Geo. S. Ahart of Summit, James, Joseph and Martin Ahart of Pleasant Valley and five daughters, Mrs. Jas. Barkley of Camino, Mrs. Lizzie McCleary of San Francisco, Mrs. Julia Robinson of Suisun, Mrs. Ida Meyers of Pleasant Valley and Mrs. Melanie Solari of Mokelumne Hill, with an aged aged husband, are left to mourn the loss of a devoted wife and mother.
The funeral took place Sunday at Pleasant Valley. Rev. E. E. Clark, assisted by Mrs. S. H. Rantz and A. S. Fox, conducting the services in the presence of a large gathering of friends who came to pay a last tribute of respect to an esteemed neighbor.Among the descendants of this sturdy pioneer are forty-five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
