Bonnie Antle (Fields) Darling(1919 - 2009)
Bonnie A. Darling was delivered by a midwife on March 19, 1919 to Pleasant "Pappy" Ephriam Fields and Ramus Ida (Thurman) Fields in Lantana, Cumberland County, Tennessee, and passed away peacefully in her home of 54 years on May 13, 2009, surrounded by her family. Bonnie was the only girl, with four brothers. Her father "Pappy" Fields moved west with the five children to Arizona after a mining accident limited his mobility. Life in Arizona included sharecropping onions. The family moved again and settled in Glennville, California, in 1934. Bonnie attended Bakersfield High School and married David Harding Fields in 1941. Bonnie married Albert Floyd Darling in 1954. Mom worked as a custodian at the Lynns Valley Poso Flat School and as a receptionist at the U.S. Forest Service Fulton Ranger Station. But her ability to give of herself at the Ranch House was her true calling. Numerous young adults and children found a second home under mom's gentle guidance and quiet support. Everyone who passed through the "Darling" ranch house will remember mom's need for rocks for her many rock walls. We were all directed to "get that rock" (regardless of weight) into the truck for her next project. Mom raised many dairy calves on a bucket to help the family income and we always had fresh eggs from her chickens. The kitchen table often seated twelve people with many others spilling into the front room, especially during hunting season. Mom and Dad fed us all and sent us on our adult life with the knowledge that only a ranch life can provide. We are all the better for having wife "Bonnie," "mother," "mom," "grandma," and "grammy" in our lives. We shall remember her building rock walls, working with her flowers and in the garden, and watching an ever-present youngster wading in Cedar Creek. She is survived by her rancher husband of 54 years Albert Floyd Darling; brother, Richard H. Fields; daughter, Betty Jo Stanfield; daughter, Bonni Ann Smith and Steven E. Hahn; son, Richard David Fields and Nancy June Fields; son, Leslie Albert Darling and Rhonda Kim Darling; and daughter, Mary Katherin Smith and Darrell Edward Smith. She has 8 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and many grown loved ones who spent time at the "Ranch House". Mom was preceded in death by her father, mother, brothers Lincoln Telus (Ted) Fields, Buster L. Fields and Vester Owen (Toby) Fields. Visitation will be Saturday, May 16, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., at Mission Mortuary 531 California Ave., Bakersfield.
