Born in Dominion, George was a son of the late Jim and Mary (Hareguy) Fortune.
He moved to Ball's Creek, a place he called home for the next 43 years. George was a member of St. Mary's parish, Frenchvale.
George worked for Devco as a mine examiner. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially reading to his seven grandchildren. His passion since his retirement was for his tarabish games. Wherever and whenever there was a game he was always willing to go.
Thanks to longtime friend Roy Germon and his brother John for their willingness to take George to his games.
George will be missed by his wife, Linda (MacKinnon) Fortune; daughter, Sheri, Ball's Creek; sons, Jason (Debbie), Sydney Mines, Steven (Heather), Dominion; grandchildren, Kelsey, Hannah, Dawson, Mikhail, Noah, Sarah and Isaac. George is also survived by brothers, John (Muriel), Reserve Mines, Charles (Betty), New Glasgow, and Michael (Kim), Kingston, Ont.
Besides his parents, George was predeceased by a brother, James, his father and mother- in-law, Ian and Mae MacKinnon.
George was especially grateful to what he considered his second family, the staff of the Renal Dialysis Unit, with their compassion, listening ears and caring ways. A huge thanks is sent to Drs. Hickey, Hewlett, Thanamayooran and Yeung for their care in keeping George with us as long as possible. A big hug goes to all the VON, nurses, palliative care and handi-trans services, they showed kindness, helpfulness and compassion at every turn.
There will be no visitation by request. Cremation has taken place. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m., Tuesday at St. Mary's Church, Frenchvale, with Rev. Paul Abbass officiating. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Renal Dialysis Unit, Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney
