Betty Jean Altum, 74, of Austin, died Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.
She was born, April 17, 1927 in Austin to George and Lulu (Jacobson) Fossey.
She graduated from Lyle High School and attended Luther College. She was married to Charles C. Altum, Jr. Aug. 21, 1948, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Lyle.
They resided in Toledo, Ohio. Following her husband's death in 1958, Betty moved with her children to Hawaii where she attended the University of Hawaii.
She returned to the Austin area in 1962 where she worked as a secretary for the Mower County Public Health Nursing Services from 1963 to 1989.
She transferred to the Mower County Recycling Center in 1989 until her retirement.
She was an avid golfer and walker.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law Cynthia and James Earnshaw, Eagle River, Alaska; a son, Mitchell Altum, Austin; two grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; a step granddaughter; two step great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Gerald and Lois Fossey, Austin; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles; and a son, Scott.
Service: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, 2001 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. Russell Wangen officiating. Clasen-Jordan Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation: Friends may call for one hour before the service at the church.
Interment: Oakwood Cemetery
Memorials: American Red Cross Tissue Services or the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank.
