Dr. Almira L Fowler Breakspear

Orange NJ, January 1, 1900 (Special). Mrs. Almira L Fowler Breakspear, formerly one of the best known physicians in the Oranges, died on Sunday night at the home of her sister, Mrs. Charlotte Fowler Wells, in Eagle Rock-ave., West Orange, from heart trouble, aggravated by pneumonia, after an illness of about a month. She had been in failing health since August. She was the daughter of Horace Fowler, of Cohocton, New York and was born there in 1826. Ten years later her father removed to Jackson, Michigan, where she was graduated from the Jackson Academy, and entered the Women's Medical College in Philadelphia, where she was graduated in 1853. For a year she was demonstrator of anatomy in the Medical College in Boston, and then practiced for some time in New York City, moving to Orange in 1858. She studied homeopathy after her graduation, and took up that school of medicine. She built up one of the largest practices in the Oranges. She was married in 1871 to J. Holden Ormsbee, who died in 1876, and in 1881 she was married to Edward Breakspear of Birmingham, England, and went there to live. On his death in 1898, she returned to her home in West Orange. She had no children. She was much interested in temperance, and in England worked and wrote much in aid of the cause. She was a member of the Carrs Lane Church in Birmingham England under the pastorate of the Reverend Dr. R. W. Dale, and was Deaconess of that church.

The funeral will be held at the home of her sister, Mrs. Wells, in West Orange, on Wednesday afternoon, on the arrival of the train leaving New York at 12:10 P.M. The burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.
