28th Chile President. Coming from Catholic Youths, he founded and he presided over the "Falange Nacional." He was a Public Work Senator, Minister, and President of Chile from 1964 to 1970. In the elections of 1970, he was defeated by Salvador Allende. The visible head of the opposition to the government of Popular Unit (1970 to 1973), he supported the military coup, but he started to distance himself from the new regime, until a point in 1980 when he directed the boycott of the constitutional referendum summoned by Chilean Dictator Augusto Pinochet. His death occurred under mysterious circumstances, in which agents of the military government could have taken part. In 2019 the six suspects were found guilty of homicide and given prison sentences. His son Eduardo was President of Chile between 1994 and 2000.
