Obit in Union Tribune:

Carol Jane Gable SAN DIEGO Born: Blue Earth, Minnesota. January 4, 1929.Passed: August 9, 2015, San Diego The fifth daughter of Harold and Celia Butler, Carol graduated from nursing school in Rochester, Minn., in 1949, worked in Rochelle, Ill., for two years before deciding that shoveling snow wasn't for her and moved to Honolulu. While working there at Queen's hospital, she met another adventurous nurse, Jeanne Hoppe. They read an ad for nurses in Guam who could bring a "pioneering spirit and a sense of humor." Carol and Jeanne took the Guam job, worked 19 months, saved their money and then traveled for two months in Asia and Japan. She returned to the U.S., worked for one year in Oakland and moved to San Diego, -
where she met, worked for and married Dr. Tom Gable. He had four children, all college age, so Carol had an instant family Tom Jr., Bill, Jim and Mona. Carol worked at Grossmont Hospital. Tom passed away in 1978. Her old friend Jeanne retired as a colonel in the U.S. Army Nursing Corps, came to visit and stayed. The two adventuresome women became global travelers and filled multiple passports with stamps from Africa, Asia, Europe, South America and Eastern Europe. When not traveling, she and Jeanne attended Clown School at SDSU, graduated and began entertaining children in local hospitals. Carol was a Chargers fan and also had SDSU football season tickets for more than 20 years. Carol had two other favorite hobbies: golf and choral singing. She sang with the San Diego Symphony Chorale, Cedar Center Chorus, Grossmont Chorale, Pacificaires and her church choir. She took great delight in her eight grandchildren (Michelle Gable Bilski, Cardiff Calif.; Brian Gable, Laguna Niguel, Calf., Lisa Gable Wheatley, Del Mar, Calif.; Dr. Michael Gable, San Diego, Calif.; Jesse and Kate Sappell, Los Angeles, Calif.; and Jimmy and Ann Gable of Colorado Springs) and six great grandchildren (Paige and Georgia Bilski; Mea and Maxine Gable; and Will and Charlotte Wheatley). She was preceded in death by her parents, four older sisters, husband Tom, and stepson, Dr. James Edwin (Jim) Gable, of Colorado Springs. Memorial services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Sept. 18 at Carol's church, Faith Lutheran Church, 5310 Orange Ave., San Diego, CA 92115, where she was active for more than 20 years. Her nephew, the Rev. Dr. David Breuger, pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church and School, Westlake, Ohio, will deliver the sermon.
