David’s parents were Steven Garfield and Eva Anderson.

He first married Edith May Scott on 20 Nov 1915 in Manhattan, New York City, New York, USA. Together, they had one daughter: Elizabeth Scott “Betty” Garfield-Hopkins-Dick. (Note: Edith remarried to Joseph William Hinchman in 1923.)

Secondly, he married Betsy C Hobe (1901-1964), daughter of Rudolph Hobe and Alice Barlow, on 13 Jan 1921. Together, they had three children: David Whitney Garfield Jr (1923-1997), Alice Garfield-Brown-Fullerton (1925-2010), and Thomas Albert Garfield (1926-1987). (Note: Betsy remarried to Richard Sterns Hathaway on 27 Nov 1954.)

He was buried on 7 Nov 1953 in Canfield Village Cemetery: Section F, Row 2.

Mahoning Dispatch, Fri, 6 Nov 1953:
"David W Garfield, 66, of Palmyra Road, died early Wednesday evening in the SS unit of Youngstown Hospital, where he had been taken following a stroke. A native of Worchester, Mass, he had resided in Canfield eight years, coming from Youngstown. Survivors include his wife, the former Betsy C Hobe, whom he married Jan 13, 1921; a daughter, Mrs John Brown of Columbiana; two sons, Thomas of Canfield and David Jr of Austintown; and six grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Williams Funeral Home, and burial made in the Canfield cemetery."
