Mary Garfield (or Gaffield) married Thomas Bishop on November 14, 1855 in Clark County, Ohio. She married Rolley P. Case on April 28, 1881 in Iroquois County, Illinois. She died at her son's home (Hanford Bishop) in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The family name is Gaffield but Garfield is the maiden name that she and some of her direct family line used. I have her death certificate and it gives her father as Putnam Garfield. Her son Hanford Bishop's death certificate gives his mother's maiden name as Garfield. Her daughter Ella's death certificate gives her mother's maiden name as Garfield. Her daughter Sarah Mae's obit also gives her mother's maiden name as Garfield. Her daughter Flora's marriage license gives her mother's maiden name as Garfield.

Mary is listed as Mary Gaffield Bishop on her marriage to Rolley Case.
~ The 1850 census for the family listed them as Gaffield.
~ Sara Bishop’s marriage to Webster listed mother as Gaffield.
~ Putnam Gaffield on the 1900 census with son, entire family listed as Gaffield (also on the 1840, 1850, 1865, and 1880 census records).
~ Original marriage record of Putnam Gaffield to Lucy

Thought I should share with you....from "The Garfield Orbit: The Life of President James A. Garfield", by Margaret Leech and Harvy J. Brown.

There had been Garfields in Massachusetts since the colony was founded. Men of the family had fought in the Revolution. The name Garfield was pronounced "Gaffield". The New England Elision (the cutting off or suppression of a vowel or syllable) was evidently used by members of the family since it persisted in the West where "R's" were notably hard.
