Alta Jane was the daughter of Joseph Cox and Sarah Ann Allen. (The 1880 U.S. Census identifies her father as Joseph Cox .) According to this Census the family lived in Proctor, Wetzel County, WV where Joseph worked as a farmer. Alta Jane had two brothers, Dean and William, and two sisters, Rose Ann and Lucy. She married Lockwood Garner, another Proctor resident, on Sep. 10, 1885. The couple eventually moved to New Martinsville (about six or seven miles away) where Lockwood had a hardware and furniture store. Alta experienced two tragedies, the sudden deaths of her husband and that of their little daughter, Ina. She devoted herself to raising their son, Harold Forrest Garner, encouraging him in all his studies and sending him to college. Harold even got interested in family history and looked into the Cox, Allen, and Garner histories.
My mother remembers her as being very frugal. Her grandmother did not waste things which could be reused; she saved remnants of fabrics out of which she made clothes for her grandchildren.
Alta became a life-long, active member of the Church of the Disciples of Christ (First Christian Church) in New Martinsville. In the hallway of this church on Maple Street is a group photo of the members of the congregation. Alta is on the right at the front.
Submitted by her great granddaughter, J. Garner Sheeran aka Maryrose.

Gravesite Details

Her grave marker in Northview Cemetery is covered with soot. I plan to get it cleaned up, as I have done with Harold's and his family's markers. Located at the left (south side) of Northview, not far from the main road, Rt. 2
