SHREVEPORT, LA - The funeral services for Charles G. Garrison, 86, will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at Kilpatrick's Rose-Neath Funeral Home, Southside Chapel. Rev. Gary Boswell will officiate and will have singing by Gary and his wife Patty of Westview Christian Church. Interment will follow in Forest Park West Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Rose-Neath's Southside from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, July 22, 2011.

Charles was born on August 4, 1924 in Dierks, AR to the late James and Nira Garrison. He passed away on July 17, 2011 in Shreveport. He grew up in Fordyce, AR where he graduated from High School in 1941 and was a member of the National Honor Society.

He had resided in Shreveport since 1941 where he worked for the Cotton Belt Railroad until 1960, when he founded Garrison Greenwood Gardens. He established the "Olde Covered Bridge Garden" in 1966. He was a member of the American Nursery News, Louisiana Association of Nurserymen, he helped organize and was an honorary member of the Shreveport Rose Society, member of the American Rose Society and the West Shreveport Rotary Club. He received the Roseshare Patron Award in 1975 for the development and advancement of Roses of the American Rose Center. On October 30, 1991 the mayor of Shreveport proclaimed that date as Mr. Shreveport Charles Garrison Day. He was also the Grand Marshal of the Pioneer Days of Greenwood, LA in 2000.

Charles attended the University of AR. While in the Army he was sent to the University of Oklahoma where he finished #1 in his class in Meteorology. He attended Centenary College. He majored in Landscape Design and Horticulture at LSU of Baton Rouge.

Charles and his wife Kate enjoyed traveling on garden tours, not only in the United States, Alaska and Hawaii but also in Mexico, Canada, Europe, Great Britain, Asia and Japan. He was owner of Garrison Greenwood Garden for 50 years and would like to say it has been a most enjoyable profession and would like to thank all the managers and employees for their loyal support for the nursery and for their personal care and friendship through the years. He would like to thank all the loyal customers for their friendship and business throughout the years.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kate Pauline Garrison; parents, "Cap" and Nira Garrison; brothers, James and Albert Garrison; sister, Mary McMan. He is survived by numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews and cousins.

Pallbearers will be Rick Mitchell, Mark Walton, Tim White, Charlie Huffman, Thomas Walker, Michael Bordelon. Honorary pallbearers are Dickey Garrison, Marshall Hall, L. N. Clinkscales, Dr. Joe White, Paul Brown, Paul Glanville, James McMan.

Thanks to Beverly Buck, Virginia Hamilton, Brenda Williams, Tracy Lee for their kind and compassionate care.

A special thank you to the doctors, nurses and staff at Willis-Knighton Hospital that have taken care of him throughout the years.

Friends and relatives may pay their respects anyway they wish by giving to their favorite charity but flowers are welcome since flowers and plants have been a symbol of love and friendship through out our history.
