d/o Michael Gaughan of Ireland, later of Flint, Wales and West Derby, Lancashire, England and Catherine Callaghan of Ireland. Her mother died in Flint, Wales while her father died in West Derby, Liverpool, Lancashire, England.

Thomas and Catherine were married in West Derby, Liverpool, Lancashire, England in 1872. They had 6 children, of which only 3 survived. Thomas according to family story studied at college to mine. Thomas immigrated to the US and to PA to mine. Catherine, her daughter, Catherine and son, Joseph immigrated in December 1880, docking in Castle Garden, New York City to join her husband. Then, in abt 1889, emigrated to Franklin, King County, Washington where the Oregon Improvement Company owned a mine. It was here while working for this company that 3 of their children died; one son, Joseph, died on 24 Aug 1894 in a mining accident while trying to save others that were trapped after having gotten out alive. Two other children, William and Mary, died as toddlers. After the mining accident, the family (her husband, Catherine, and 3 daughters, Katherine, Eleanor and Gertrude) moved to Seattle, where he lived until he deceased in 1911
