Mary was the daughter of James and Bridget Barrett of Belmullet, Co. Mayo, IRE. Her 1st husband was James Gaughan of the same town. After James' death, she married widower, John O'Malley in 1870, and traveled with some of her children to Scotland (according to census reports in 1881 and 1891). Her 2nd husband died in 1890 and she and her children moved to Pittsburgh, PA in 1892 (according to the 1900c). She resided there until her death in 1911. Her obituary in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette of April 6th that year states she was survived by 5 sons: Martin J. of McKeesport, PA, Bernard of Homestead, PA, James of Birmingham, ALA, Michael and John F of Pittsburgh, PA.
The Family plot at Calvary Cemetery in Pittsburgh was purchased by her son John F Gaughan. According to cemetery records, there are 5 sites of which only 4 are occupied. They are:
#1: Mary Gaughan (interned 4/7/1911), Sarah C. Hughes and John T. Gaughan
#2: Mary E. (interned 4/21/41) listed as John F's wife, and Bernice E. listed as his daughter
#3: Empty
#4: Michael (interned 1/27/1915, which would coincide with his DOD 1/24/1915) His name is listed as Gaughan (-en); Infant Hughes (1/21/1921), and Samuel Hughes (1/22/1915)
