Gary W. Gifford, of Cotuit, departed this life October 11, 2008, in the presence of his family.

Mr. Gifford, a 12th generation Cape Codder, was the son of Phyllis Sylver Gifford and the late Harold I. Gifford.

He spent his childhood in Marstons Mills and graduated from Barnstable Vocational High School in 1973 and entered the Navy, spending three years aboard an aircraft carrier in the China Sea.

Returning to Marstons Mills, Gary married his now former wife, Michelle Banner Correa-Neto, and had two children, Mya Gifford and Gary W. Gifford Jr., both of Virginia. His children were the joy of his life. Mr. Gifford and his wife moved to Cotuit, where he followed his calling as a commercial shellfisherman. From time to time, he was engaged in other maritime pursuits, most recently with Cotuit Mooring and Marine Co.

Mr. Gifford, with his father, were among the first appointees to the Town of Barnstable Shellfish Task Force. He loathed the coastal over-development and took a keen interest in the local ecology. He considered the invasion into Barnstable waters of fecal coliform and other pollutants as a personal affront! He was always appreciative of the efforts of former Town Councillors Mimi McConnell, Peter Jasin and Gloria Rudman on behalf of the shellfisheries.

A voracious reader, his interest covered a wide spectrum of subjects. He read to learn. He also faithfully followed televised sporting events.

Mr. Gifford possessed a quiet appreciation for his family history and lineage. Paternally, the Giffords were actively engaged in the civic and religious affairs in their generations from their arrival in Sandwich 1650s to the present day. He took great pleasure in the maritime history on his mother's side, the Shivericks, of the famous East Dennis Shiverick Shipyards. For a generation, they built the fastest clipper ships in the nation.

Survivors, in addition to his children and mother, include five siblings, Judy Delonis of Centerville, Shelley Gifford of Marstons Mills, Eric Gifford of Cotuit, Sherri Berreto and Terri Gifford, both of Louden, NH; a grandson, Jason Demers, as well as a friend, Paul Noonan of Cotuit, with whom he shared a house and many nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends.

Gary was also preceded in death by two siblings, Gregg Gifford and Laurie Gifford, and a niece, Melissa Gifford.
