The moon blinked for a moment on March 18th, 2015 to mark the passing of long time Miles City resident Alene Gilmore Hoye.

She grew up in the midst of a larger than life family of pioneers, scouts, ranchers and entrepreneurs (her father built the 600 Bar in Miles City, and Tom Gilmores Place in Broadus), Alene saw the world through a lens that most people couldn’t imagine.

Born in 1918, the loved daughter of Tom and Rose (Girlie) Gilmore, she was raised on the family ranches on the Mizpah, at the YT near Olive, and on the Tongue River. She rode her little pony, Cupie, four miles each way to school in Olive as a young girl.

At just thirteen Alene visited Paris for the first time with her aunt, Louise Vautier Gilmore. She fell in love with the world and travel at that point and went on to visit places such as Tahiti, Italy, Nova Scotia, Hawaii, and Mexico, to mention just a few, with family and friends.

Alene was 32 when she met and married the love of her life, Walter (Butz) Hoye. They lived in Enis, Mt for the first 15 years of their marriage. Their life together was a long honeymoon of laughter, love and companionship. Butz passed away much too soon but his love was with her to the end of her life.

She never missed a lick and was keen to learn from everyone and everything around her. To her a handshake was a contract of trust and respect. Always independent she loved good bourbon, handsome men, classy clothes and interesting people. Her holiday fudge was famous and loved by everyone who was lucky enough to find some in their mailbox. She cherished a good story and an honest laugh. Her family and friends (and legion of kitties) will miss her greatly and are thankful to have known someone who embodied the best in human nature.

She is survived by her cousin Ramona Liming Kubrich and extended family, of Missoula; her sweet friend and near brother Charles Hahnkamp, and extended family, of Melrose; and her adopted daughter (and third cousin) Patty Amundson Matthews and her children Tanya and Eric (the man in her life at the end), of Dammeron Valley, UT.

The date of her memorial service will be announced. Services will be held at the old YT Ranch near Olive, MT.
