Remembering Mama"

1922-2014

Mary C. Gomez, born on May 8, 1922 in Santa Rita, New Mexico to Andres Gomez and Guillerma Castillo. She was one of 12 children. To many she was often referred to as the "runt" of the family only because her brothers and sisters were much taller than her. Mary was raised in Hanford all of her life. She grew up in a time when as a young girl, she and her family traveled to different areas in the valley working in the fields picking cotton, picking grapes, ect.

It was often said while picking cotton Mom could always be heard whistling a tune. Her whistle was so beautiful she was compared to a canary. She lived through the great depression, WWII, and knew what it was like to live through difficult times.

On February 14, 1947 she married Raymond Casarez, where they made their home in Hanford. Mom was so happy when she and Dad bought their first and only home on "Kimball Lane". It was a small 2 bedroom home where they would raise their 7 children. The same home she lived in all her life.

Mom was a homemaker most of her life, taking care of 7 children was no easy task… She had taught her children to be respectful of others and never to talk back. Anytime any of us kids got out of hand you knew it by that look she gave you. Mom had a love for music, not only could she play the guitar, she also had the beautiful voice to go along with it. Mom and dad loved playing their guitars together. Our fondest memories were sitting on the couch on Saturday evening's listening to our parents play their guitars… that was our entertainment. Our loving Mama went to sleep peacefully surrounded by her family on August 3, 2014. She is survived by her children; Mary Alice Alcoser (Rito), Lydia Rios, Richard Casarez (Christina), Angie Duran (Jess) all of Hanford. Her brother Willie Gomez (Jeanie), sisters; Antonia Garcia, Josie Gonzalez all of Hanford. 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren, all whom she loved so dearly. She was Aunt Mary to numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Casarez, 3 sons; Raymond Jr, Daniel and Sammy Casarez.

For all who knew her, Mama was a quiet individual with a mild spirit. She never complained and lived a very simple life. As long as she had her coffee and tuna sandwiches she was content. Even though difficult times there was nothing that could wipe away that beautiful smile. We were so blessed to have had our Mom with us for as long as we did.

The family would like to thank Dr. Buchanan, nurse Sandy Rodriguez, Kings Nursing & Rehabilitation Center, and the 3rd floor nursing staff at Adventist Health Hospital for all their kindness and compassion they showed to our Mom.

There will be a visitation on Thursday, August 7, 2014 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. with a Rosary to follow at 6:30 p.m. at Whitehurst-McNamara Funeral Service. Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, August 8, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church burial to follow at Calvary cemetery.
