The viewer may notice that the headstone inscription varies from the year given here as Nana's birth date. The headstone inscription is what she herself decided to have "carved in stone" one might say. In the same way, Nana provided the author of the Goodridge Genealogy with information regarding her father's family.

"NANA ESTELLE GOODRIDGE (Samuel White (7), Asash (6), Asaph (5), David (4), Philip (3), Joseph (2), William (1)) was born in Whitesville, Alleghany County, N.Y. January 12, 1865*. To her is due nearly all that is here presented concerning the family of Samuel White Goodridge. ...
She married, in Corning, N. Y., April 20, 1892, WILLIAM ROBERT BRAGG, born in Fallbrook, Pa., October 25, 1868, son of Frederick and Mary (Warner) Bragg. Residence, Rochester, N. Y." **

*An addendum to the "Goodridge Genealogy" was compiled by Evelyn (DeWitte) Marriott, a granddaughter of Nana (Goodridge) Bragg. It included this notation: "Nana Bragg later confessed to her family that it [her birth year] was 1863 but [she] felt it unladylike to be more than three years older than her husband. Therefore, when the headstone had been carved following her husband's death, she admitted the deception..."

Census records through the years are consistent with Nana's "confession," Evelyn Marriott's work, and the actual date of Nana's birth. Her date of birth is 12 January 1863.

She was my great grandmother and I remember visiting her in her room and helping her with whatever jigsaw puzzle was on her cardtable (and there was always one there). Nana Estelle (Goodridge) Bragg, Grandma "B" to most of us, was kind and generous and loving. And ladylike.
