Father: Capt Nathaniel Goodwin
Mother: Sally Stone

Abt Sally (Stone) Goodwin: Sally Stone was found by the epitaph on her tomb cover at Copp's Hill: "683. Here lies the Body of Sally Goodwin, Wife to Capt. Nathaniel Goodwin of Charlestown, and Eldest Daughter of Mr. John & Sarah Stone of Newbury Port, who departed this Life Augst 23d 1781, aged 25 years." ~ The Graveyards of Boston: First Volume, Copp's Hill Epitaphs, pg 36, by William Henry Whitmore (1878).

The Sally Stone, dau of John & Sarah (Thomas) Stone of Gloucester was b. 17 Oct 1752 Gloucester. According to this Sally's death vital, she was b. abt 1756 Newburyport, so she is prob the daughter of John & Sarah (Miller) Stone b. 20 Feb 1757 Newbury[port].

The family does seem to think she is the dau of John & Sarah (Miller) Stone b. 1767 at Newburyport. I have searched Stone Family Association, 1897-1901 : catalogue of members, with lines of descent on Ancestry.com and cannot get information about John Stone at Newbury or Newburyport at all. I also was not able to get any information regarding Sally Stone's birth other than the vital at FamilySearch. (It appears the only info at Ancestry.com is the Title and index only, no pages.) I do agree with the family, but would have preferred proof. I'm sorry I couldn't help further, but I was able to confirm this Sally's links to her parents with vitals and newspaper announcements. I would think the book to be necessary for confirming Sarah (Miller) Stone's maiden name and vitals.

Goodwin, Nathaniel, Capt., d. Boston, yesterday, aged 72 yrs. cc. 26 Feb 1817, Columbian Centinel. I have requested the death announcement for Capt Nathaniel Stone and the epitaph for Sally (Stone) Goodwin be placed in the bio so I can remove the information from this profile. I was speaking to a family member's genealogist, and the only question remaining was the quotation at time of marriage was that Capt Nathaniel was "of Cambridge", but on Sally's epitaph he is given as "of Charlestown". He was born at Charlestown, not Lowell, not Cambridge, and resided sometime after his marriage to Frances Rand at Harvard Sq, Cambridge. He must have stayed at Cambridge after the death of Frances in 1776, but was prob a member of Old North Church in Boston. He seemed to be at Boston after his marriage to Sally in 1780. I always question the two different cemetery burials, but Sally Stone's burial seems to be a single lot burial, and the family was using Copp's Hill, and Capt Nathaniel is at Granary at his 3rd wife's family tomb.
There is a "Mrs. Sarah Goodwin" who died 11 Jan 1846 (b. 1761) at Newburyport; she was the widow of Jacob Goodwin but I am unable to find a maiden name for her. It does clear her for being the mother of this Sally.

Notes: There is an Ann Elizabeth Atkins b. abt 1822 that m. 1842 to William Smith at Boston. I think she may be the dau of Isaac and Sally; that may be their child interred into this tomb in 1861.

There were 2 re-interments from Newburyport 5 May 1858; it also may be that there were re-interments from tomb 97, Copp's Hill, Boston, but I'm not seeing record of it. There seemed to be an issue with getting her spouse and Nathaniel Goodwin II into the tomb at Copp's Hill and they were interred at Newburyport. So there may be two different dates of re-interment with only Newburyport being recorded. Mount Auburn does have the vital stats for Nathaniel Goodwin Atkins I and the name on the gate at this tomb is Isaiah Atkins, who was interred at tomb 97 at Copp's Hill, issue being, there is not an Isaiah Atkins on the burial database for this lot. I can't ask a researcher over to Copp's Hill to take a look at this tomb because Henry Jr's family is still in it; the only thing they would be able to see is if the tomb is actually still there.
