The youngest of six children of the Reverend Edwin Bruce Gowan and Esther Hatton Douglass Gowan, she was born in Jackson, Tennessee on November 7, 1920.
On April 18, 1947, she married William Lee Brien who preceded her in death. They moved to Huntsville and became charter members of Trinity Methodist Church where they were actively involved as Sunday School Teachers with her focus being on two year olds. She enjoyed Bible study, prayer group and singing in the choir.
She leaves two daughters, Dr. Betsy Duke and Debbie Schwarz (Nick) as well as eight grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to Trinity Methodist or Huntingdon College in Montgomery.
