HOLD RITES HERE TODAY FOR MRS. ELLA CASTLEMAN

Mrs. Ella Castleman, 77, another of Hartford's pioneer citizens, died at 3:10 Monday morning at her home at 21 Hillsboro street, after a four weeks illness of paralysis and complications. Funeral rites for her will be held this (Wednesday) afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Zuver & Calvin chapel. The Rev. A. E. Murphy of the Federated church will officiate and a great niece of Mrs. Castleman, Mrs. Eunice Maurig, will render two selections, "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere" and "In the Garden," accompanied at the piano by Miss Ruth Williams. Casket bearers will be Jay Parker, Harvey Haynes, David Cameron, Conrad Kabel, August Kabel and Milton Conklin. Burial will be at Maple Hill beside the grave of her late husband. Born at Defiance, O., on March 24, 1857, Mrs. Castleman, whose maiden name was Ella Granda, was left an orphan at the age of 6 years. She was taken into the home of a family named Sneed at Bryan, Ohio, where she resided until 18 years of age. Two sisters, who had lived with other families, had come to Hartford and Mrs. Castleman joined them here. Her first years here were as a seamstress for the late Mrs. Lydia Thomas. The two sisters have preceded her in death. After spending a few years in several homes in Hartford and Lawrence, she was married on July 5, 1879, to Isaac Castleman. They spent their entire life in Hartford, the first six years on a farm owned by his father, the late Sylvaneus Castleman, now the Christensen place 1 3/4 miles east of town on US-12. They then purchased the farm 1 1/4 miles east of town where they resided until three years ago when they moved to the village and sold the farm to Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Baaba. One son was born to them in 1880, who died a few hours after birth. Mr. and Mrs. Castleman celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary in 1932 prior to his death on April 27, 1933. They took one of their sister's children at the age of 2 1/2 years, Mrs. Edward Beatty of this place, who lived with them until her marriage, and who in turn has cared for them during their last years. The past 16 months Earl Nutting resided with them and aided in their care. Mrs. Castleman is survived by several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, six great-great nephews and two great-great nieces, as well as by a wide circle of friends and neighbors among whom both Mr. and Mrs. Castleman were held in high esteem during their long residence here.
