Secretary of Barber Union Expires Here – A. F. Gray Had Ben Resident of Shreveport for 20 Years; Rites Delayed
Pending the arrival of a sister, expected to arrive today from Patoka, Ill., funeral arrangements for Alphonse F. Gray, 42, of 405 Stoner avenue, well-known Shreveport barber, who died in a local sanitarium early Monday of pneumonia, have been delayed.
Mr. Gray had been ill for about three weeks and expired about 4 a.m. Monday. The body is being held at Wellman's funeral home until the arrival of his sister, Mrs. Lillian Shimp of Patoka.
He was an active member of the Shreveport chapter of Jehovah's Witnesses, formerly the International Bible Students, who will have charge of the funeral rites.
A resident of Shreveport for about 20 years, Mr. Gray was employed by Dixie barber shop and for the past three years had been active in the work of the local barber's union, being secretary of the organization.
Mr. Gray, who was not married, is survived by other relatives in Illinois and Ohio. He was a member of the Marshall, Texas, lodge of Elks and was a World War veteran, having seen several years of service overseas. He was also a member of the Lowe-McFarlane post of the American Legion.
