"Cars" and his wife, Bertha, died when the "Shinnston Tornado" destroyed their home in Oakdale. In all, the tornado took 72 lives in Harrison County, 9 in Barbour County, 3 in Marion County, 7 in Randolph County, and 103 in all of West Virginia; seriously injured 846 persons and destroyed 404 homes.
