US NAVY - WORLD WAR II


Albert J. "Pappy" Gurtner, 91, of West Deer Township, passed away suddenly Thursday, Feb. 12, 2015, at his residence. Mr. Gurtner was born Jan. 8, 1924, in the Bloomfield area of Pittsburgh, to the late Albert and Selma (Matter) Gurtner. He served in the Navy as a fireman second class during World War II aboard the USS Missouri. Mr. Gurtner was on the Missouri during the signing of the Japanese Instrument of Surrender, Sept. 2, 1945. He worked as a heavy truck mechanic for Werner Continental, McKees Rocks, Jones Motor Freight, Indiana Township, and New Day Delivery Service, Pittsburgh. Albert was a member of the Missourian Club, Lodge No. 45 F and AM, Pittsburgh, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite 32, Valley of Pittsburgh, Syria Shrine, Cheswick, and a life member of West Deer VFD No. 2.


Albert enjoyed spending time with family and visiting friends around the West Deer Township area. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lillian I. (Rieger) Gurtner; daughters, Lillian S. (Frank) Catalano, of Houston, and Rose Ann (James) Kunkle, of West Deer Township; sister, Margaret Gregg, of Etna; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Chris, William, Louis and Ruth Gurtner, Mary Nalor, Emma Zinsser and Louise Wickert.


Friends and family are invited to attend visitation from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, 2015, at the ADAM SIEMIANOWSKI FUNERAL HOME, 179 Starr Road, Russellton, West Deer Township. Funeral services will be held at noon Monday in the funeral home, with the Rev. Jerry Palawski officiating.
