She was born Vernice Georgiana Haden on June 21, 1922 at home in a small court on Redondo Avenue in Long Beach, California to Vernon and Peggy Haden. The doctor who attended her birth was the local high school football doctor.
Vernice graduated from San Pedro High and the University of Southern California with her teaching degree. Before "team teaching" was thought of, Vernice and another teacher "shared" a class in order to raise their families.
On March 25, 1945, she married her high school sweetheart, Carl "Gordon" Brownlee who died March 4, 2010. On August 5, 1946, son, Carl, and on October 10. 1948, daughter, Peggy, were born and they both survive.
In the Fall of 1951, Vernice caught polio. Being a "survivor", she spent a year in a rehabilitation hospital for people with polio and then returned home. She started teaching again, first nursery school and then 20 years teaching fourth grade. She retired in 1977 from Chadwick School in California.
Vernice loved children. She was a certified Cub Scout leader and the same with Brownies. She not only belonged to the P.T.A. but was President several times. After retirement, she held a summer camp for children from local schools and those from the school she taught in. By 1978, Vernice and her husband were full-time Selma residents, moving to Grants Pass in 2004. In Oregon, she joined the Selma Grange, was a 30 year member of the Eastern Star, Western Star Chapter, serving as Worthy Matron in 1989 and Grand Ruth in 1990 for the Oregon Grand Chapter. She also belonged to Daughters of the Nile in Medford. Last but not least, Vernice was a "stamp nut" and belonged to both the Rogue Valley Stamp Club and Southern Oregon Philatelic Society.
