DR. HADEN DEAD.

He Passed Away in Philadelphia Saturday, Sketch of His Life.

Dr. John M. Haden departed this life at 1:40 a.m. yesterday morning in Philadelphia, where he had been on a protracted visit to his sons, John and Harry, who are there studying medicine.

The deceased suffered a stroke of apoplexy about one week ago and lingered until death came as a happy relief at an early hour yesterday morning. His remains, accompanied by his sons, left Philadelphia yesterday and will reach here about Wednesday morning. Meanwhile a notice will be published in THE NEWS informing his friends of the time and place of his funeral.

Dr. Haden was born in Lowndes county, Mississippi, May 25, 1825. He was 67 years and 5 months of age at his death. He descended from an old Scottish family which came to this country in the seventeenth century. His father, Robert D. Haden, was a native of Virginia, and was conspicuous in mercantile and public service. He died in Galveston in 1874, at the age of 78.

After attending Jackson college, at Columbia, Tenn., Dr. Haden completed his literary course at La Grange college, Alabama, and in 1847 he graduated as M. D. from the medical department of the university of New Orleans. He soon after entered the service of the United States government and was commissioned an assistant surgeon, serving with distinction until the breaking out of the civil war. He entered the service of the confederacy and was soon advanced until he was upon the staff of General Holmes as medical director of the department and afterward in the same capacity with General E. Kirby Smith until 1864, when he became chief of the medical bureat of the trans-Mississippi department, headquarters at Marshall, Tex. At the close of the war he came to Galveston and began the practice of medicine. He was very successful in the practice of his profession, and was at one time president of the Galveston county medical society and president of the board of directors of the Galveston medical college. In 1878 he became a member and the president of the Galveston board of health and was re-elected president in 1879.

Under his presidency of the board of health it was demonstrated that the yellow fever does not originate in Galveston, but is conveyed here.

It is probably due to Dr Hayden's measures adopted in the epidemic of 1878 that such a strict state quarantine has been established, and the testimony of leading citizens is preserved which credits his vigilance with the preservation of this city from horrors of the epidemic which swept over some of our neighboring communities during his administration of our health affairs.

January 8, 1868, Dr. Haden was married to Miss Sarah B. Brannum, a daughter of William Brannum, an officer in the Texas navy, but who was lost at sea while the daughter was but a mere child. Mrs. Haden was a great favorite in Galveston society, and her death four years ago was regretted by her many friends. To Dr. and Mrs. Haden were born three children, one daughter, Elizabeth, born in 1869, and who died in 1884, when she was just blooming into lovely womanhood, and two sons, now living - John B., born August 27, 1871, and Henry Cooper, born December 7, 1873.

Dr. Haden's death will be mourned by his many friends and his memory will be revered while gratitude for humane virtues move the hearts of men.

HADEN, JOHN MILLER (1825–1892). John Miller Haden, physician, professor at the Medical Branch of the University of Texas (now the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston), and public-health specialist, son of Robert D. and Sarah (McGowen) Haden, Jr., was born on May 25, 1825, in Lowndes County, Mississippi. After attending Jackson College at Columbia, Tennessee, he graduated from La Grange College (Alabama) and in 1847 received his M.D. degree from the Medical College of the University of New Orleans. President James K. Polk commissioned him assistant surgeon in the United States Army in December 1847; Haden was assigned to duty under Gen. Winfield Scott and was with him at the fall of Veracruz. He remained in the army after the Mexican War as medical officer in the party that escorted the civil officials of Oregon Territory to their posts. When the Civil War began Haden was stationed at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. He resigned his commission and entered the Confederate Army medical corps. In 1864 he became chief of the medical bureau of the Trans-Mississippi Department, the headquarters of which were at Marshall, Texas.

At the close of the war he went to Galveston and practiced medicine. In 1873, when the first board of trustees of the Medical Branch of the University of Texas appointed examiners for professorships at the new school, Haden was selected to teach materia medica and therapeutics. When yellow fever spread through many communities in the Gulf states in 1878, Haden, as president of the Galveston Board of Health, placed the city under such a strict quarantine that no case of yellow fever developed there even though thousands died in other places. Although the quarantine was very unpopular with some business people, the citizens of Galveston recognized Haden's contributions with a testimonial in 1880, when he retired from the health department.

On January 8, 1868, Dr. Haden married Sarah Best Brannum, daughter of Texas Navy officer William Thomas Brannum. The Hadens had three children. Haden died on October 25, 1892, in Philadelphia, where he had been visiting his sons, who were studying medicine there. Both Dr. and Mrs. Haden are buried in Trinity Episcopal Cemetery in Galveston.-Mary Smith Fay
