Insights from a Coopertown resident... The Bemis bloodline ran out in the 1960s. Henry and Weltha Bemis were pioneers on the Steele County side of the line. Both were educated and moonlighted as teachers.
Funeral services for Mrs. Weltha Bemis, 89, pioneer Steele County school teacher who died at her home in Greenville Township last Thursday, May 30, were held in the Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 1. Rev. W. Ray Radliff, pastor, officiated.
Mrs. Bemis was born September 8, 1856, at Darlington, Wis., and was married to Henry A. Bemis there in 1876. The couple came to Dakota Territory in 1882, homesteading on the farm in Greenview. Mr. Bemis died in 1929. During their early residence there, both Mr. and Mrs. Bemis taught school in Steele, the latter having 29 years of teaching service to her credit.
She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Myrtle Porterville of Cooperstown; and two son, Melvin H. Bemis of Minneapolis, and Byron of Cooperstown.
