Nov. 29, 1919—July 9, 2010

Dorothy Caroline Gerving, 90, died on July 9, 2010 at Country Assisted Living in Tehachapi, Calif. Dorothy was born on Nov. 29, 1919 in Osmond, Neb. to Edward and Lydia Hagel. Dorothy was raised on a farm near Burke, South Dakota where she attended a one room school. In 1940 she married Alvin Guthmiller and they settled on a farm southeast of Fairfax, S.D. where she developed her many skills as a homemaker. When Alvin purchased a John Deere dealership in Bonesteel, S.D., Dorothy served as bookkeeper. When her family, which now included two daughters, Gail and Cheryl, moved to Arcata, Calif., Dorothy worked as a dental assistant, secretary to the Dean of Women at Humboldt State University and as a bookkeeper at a local CPA firm. In the early 70s Dorothy moved to Redding, Calif. where she remained until 2004.

Dorothy loved the Lord and was a lifelong Lutheran who served in many ways by volunteering at her church as a Sunday school teacher, choir member and women's retreat organizer. Dorothy loved music and especially loved ballroom dancing. Dorothy also loved spending time with her friends and was known for her hospitality. Dorothy loved to bake and share her goodies with family and friends; she could whip up a pie or two in no time.

Dorothy was preceded in death by husbands Alvin Guthmiller (1968), Clarence Plambeck (1977), and Walter Gerving (1998) and her four brothers; Morris, Clarence, Ellsworth and Elmer Hagel. She leaves behind her daughter, Cheryl Johnson and son-in-law, Ted Johnson of Tehachapi, Calif. and daughter Gail Rinne and son-in-law Ray Rinne of Colorado Springs, Colo. Dorothy's much loved grandchildren are Dayna Rinne Frei, Kari Rinne Baker, Eric Johnson, Jon Johnson, and Kimberly Johnson Latona. Dorothy was also blessed with six great grandchildren: Heidi, Leah and Grant Johnson; Hannah and Madeline Frei and Charlotte Baker. She will also be missed by several nieces and nephews. We miss Dorothy and are grateful for the values she instilled in us all.

Many thanks go the caring staff at Country Assisted Living in Tehachapi.

A graveside service with interment will take place at Redding Cemetery at Continental and Eureka Way, Redding, Calif. on Thursday, July 15 at 10 a.m. A Celebration of Life service will follow at 11 a.m. on July 15 at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1590 Spruce St., Anderson, Calif. Rev. Paul Johnston will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in memory of Dorothy Gerving to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Checks can be made payable to JDRF Colorado Springs Branch, 3710 Sinton Road, Suite 220, Colorado Springs, CO, 80907.
