Doris Mae Hairston Banks, departed this life on Monday, September 11, 2006 at Durham Regional Hospital, Durham, N.C. She was born in Roanoke, Virginia to the late Mr. Mark H. and Claratine Holland Hairston. Mrs. Banks was a graduate of Lucy Addison High School. She received her undergraduate degree from Virginia Union University in Richmond, Va. and her masters' degree from Columbia University in New York, N.Y. Mrs. Banks was a longtime educator in the Roanoke City School System. Her career as an educator spanned 40 years. She was a longtime member of St. Gerard Catholic Church, in Roanoke, Virginia. Mrs. Banks was married for 51 years to the late Dr. Theodore W. Banks, DDS. To this union, two daughters were born, Cynthia Banks Robinson of Midlothian, Va., and Dr. Faye Theresa Banks (Dr. Harvey L. McMurray) of Durham, N.C. Mrs. Banks was predeceased by one brother, Mr. Calvin Hairston. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Iris Hairston Alsop; sisters-in law, Mrs. Louise Hairston and Mrs. Helen Banks; brothers-in-law, Mr. Simon Alsop, Mr. Lester Banks, and Mr. Maitland Banks; two grandchildren, Mr. Conrad B. Robinson of Midlothian, Va. and Mr. Harvey L. McMurray, Jr. of Durham, N.C.; two stepgrandchildren, Mr. H. Wesley Robinson of Fairfax, Va. and Mr. Michael Robinson of Arlington, Va.; one niece, Ms. Adrienne Alsop; one nephew, Mr. Alonso Alsop; and a host of friends and acquaintances. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. at St. Gerard Catholic Church on Saturday, September 16, 2006. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
