Anchorage resident Florence Marie Adams, 78, died Nov. 4, 1999, at Alaska Regional Hospital. Visitation was held at Evergreen Memorial Chapel downtown. A memorial Mass was at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, 825 S. Klevin St., with the Rev. Monsignor Francis Cowgill officiating. Burial was at Anchorage Memorial Park Cemetery in the Catholic section with her husband, Harry Adams.
Mrs. Adams was born Jan. 5, 1921, in Los Angeles County. During the early 1940s, a ''spirited and fearless'' Florence Halsey came to Alaska from California. During her early 20s, she and her good friend Toby were licensed hairdressers who sometimes waited tables as they worked their way from Juneau to Fairbanks, Healy and even Whittier before Mrs. Adams met and married the love of her life, Harry Adams, in Anchorage. Harry was a jeweler with a shop on Fourth Avenue. He and Florence were an ''attractive, popular couple'' from Anchorage to Big Lake, where they loved boating with friends and family. From their home on Campbell Creek, they enjoyed growing strawberries and raspberries during summer and entertaining during winter. After Harry died in the early 1970s, Mrs. Adams continued to work for the Federal Aviation Administration until a serious illness took her to California for surgery. She stayed on after her recovery to care for her mother and stepfather until their deaths. She then lived with family briefly in Texas and Pennsylvania before realizing her long-held desire of returning to Alaska. From 1990 until her death, Mrs. Adams lived with her Alaskan niece and nephew, Bert and SanDee McQueen. She also cherished her friends at the Serendipity Adult Day Center and was treasured by her nieces and their families. Her family said: ''Sharing stories of her early days in Alaska gave her great pleasure. Her sparkling sense of humor delighted everyone. A warm and loving presence, Florence will be missed. ''She loved to dance and was an accomplished seamstress. She loved to work crossword puzzles and play cards. She especially loved to socialize with friends at Serendipity Adult Center.'' Memorial donations may be sent to the Salvation Army Adult Day Facility, Serendipity, c/o Salvation Army, P.O. Box 101459, Anchorage 99510-1459.
